New to Umamusume? Here's How to Dive Deeper and REALLY Get It (Trust Me!)
**Heads up, Umamusume fans! Just a friendly spoiler warning before you dive in. This article discusses elements of the game's character stories and how they tie into the overall narrative. If you're sensitive to spoilers and prefer to discover things on your own, you might want to bookmark this for later!**
Hey everyone! So, you just started playing Umamusume, right? Ever checked out the Character Stories? You can find 'em in the "Story" section at the bottom of your home screen, then head to "Umamusume Story."
Seriously, these Character Stories are packed with so much more than just a character's charm. You get glimpses into daily life at Tracen Academy and tons of other cool stuff.
Each character has 7 episodes, but you can't binge 'em all at once. If a character's on a gacha pickup banner, you can watch episodes 1-4 for free.
Episodes 5 through the end are kinda like a fan service bonus – only for those who've pulled the character from the gacha and raised their bond level a bit. Even if a character isn't on a banner, if you have a 3-star Exchange Ticket (voucher), you can still check out episode 1 for that character.
My advice to you, if I can give any, is to unlock these Character Stories whenever you can, whether you pull the character or not during their pickup.
Why? 'Cause every time you unlock a story, you get a few Carrots (Jewels) for gacha pulls. Plus, if you miss their pickup period, you'll have to wait for another one or pull them naturally from the gacha to see their story.
Once you've unlocked a story, you can rewatch it anytime. More Carrots, too! It's literally all upside, I highly recommend it.
Now, let's talk a bit more about what these Character Stories actually contain. Episodes 1-4 cover the story of how the Trainer meets the Trainee and how they form their contract. Episodes 5 through the end are little side stories not covered in Career Mode – definitely some fan service elements there. This structure stays the same no matter the character.
Just imagine:
-
How did you manage to sign a contract with a highly anticipated Umamusume who has all the popularity and talent?
-
How did you end up getting into a contract with such a wild and unconventional Umamusume?
Career Mode intentionally skips these origin stories and throws you right into the "now." Career Mode is about them running in the "present," while Character Stories reveal the "why they are here" – their "background."
When these two pieces come together, that's when we truly start to love them, you know?
Anyway, as I said at the beginning, Character Stories are full of charm, daily Tracen Academy life, and so much more. Through these meeting stories, you learn:
-
What motivated them to enroll in Tracen Academy?
-
What kind of friends are they surrounded by?
-
What kind of Trainer did they meet?
These stories beautifully depict their daily lives and emotions.
It's super important to remember that each Umamusume has a different Trainer. That means while you, the player, stay the same, the Trainer character is a unique individual for each girl.
The paths to glorious victory in Career Mode are incredibly varied. You might see a brilliant Trainer-Trainee duo dominating the winner's circle, or maybe an underdog story starting from scratch with a Trainer no one paid attention to. You could even experience a journey where a seemingly smooth start hits a devastating setback, which the Trainer and Trainee overcome together, growing as a pair. (Those of you who just started the EN server probably already know about these different paths.)
Each character has a Trainer persona perfectly suited for that Umamusume and their unique pairing. These are one-of-a-kind stories, richly packed with factual episodes about real racehorses, jockeys, stable staff, owners, and even unexpected stakeholders.
What if, in this Umamusume timeline, these girls hadn't met their destined Trainer? Well, sometimes that's explored in the Career Mode of their peers or close Umamusume friends. I really encourage you to check that out for yourself!
The scenario creation team at Cygames goes above and beyond, meticulously picking up past data, race developments, and even historical racing newspaper articles and quotes from people involved at the time, skillfully weaving them into the Umamusume narrative.
Even for a gacha game where money flies around, the fact that they pour so much heart and soul into a basically free-to-play game is astonishing. That's how captivating and wonderful these character stories are.
Why are such amazing stories available for free, you ask? Well, it's gotta be Cygames' trap, right? 😉
Thanks for reading! Hope you have an awesome day!
